Over 5 million small-scale traders (women & men) sell their farm produce near the main cross-country roads. These small traders sell fresh harvests from their small farms to millions of travelers in the country daily. Some of these are smallholders who have benefited from the use of solar-powered irrigation that increased farm yields and lowered the cost of production.
However, the roadside markets they use are often makeshift with no services such as electricity, sanitation, cold storage facilities or shade/shelter. This initiative aims to provide solar street lights and solar-powered refrigerators to roadside entrepreneurs along the Highways to improve market access for their produce and allow them to sell their produce both day and night.
