Dar es Salaam. For seven long years, the AfriCraft Waste Management and Information Centre at Coco Beach stood in darkness.

Not because its mission was small but because it lacked the power to shine.

Today, the lights are finally on.

Elico Foundation is proud to have powered the AfriCraft Centre with a new solar energy system, restoring life to a space dedicated to protecting the ocean, recycling waste, and transforming trash into opportunity. What once closed early is now alive again day and night.

This partnership would not have been possible without the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania, which funded the electrification and recommended Elico for the technical support.

Elico and the Embassy are long-standing partners through the Kijanisha Afya Programme, and this collaboration opened a new chapter of shared impact beyond health into climate action and environmental protection.

Before the official switch-on event on January 21, Elico joined Ireland’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Nicola Brennan, AfriCraft members, and community volunteers to clean Coco Beach and plant trees turning action into a symbol of collective responsibility.

AfriCraft CEO Kelvin Nicholas described the moment as a rebirth.

The AfriCraft Centre plays a vital role along the coastline managing waste, recycling and upcycling materials, cleaning the beach, creating awareness, and adding value to waste that would otherwise pollute the ocean. Ambassador Nicola Brennan congratulated both organizations and reminded the community of what is at stake.
