ELICO Foundation’s efforts to strengthen healthcare services in rural Tanzania have received international recognition after being featured by Irish Aid, the Government of Ireland’s official development cooperation programme, for the impact of the Kijanisha Afya initiative.

In the feature titled “Delivering Sustainable Healthcare for Rural Families in Tanzania,” Irish Aid highlights how the Kijanisha Afya programme is helping transform healthcare delivery in climate-vulnerable communities by combining renewable energy, clean water, and sustainable infrastructure to improve essential health services.

Implemented by ELICO Foundation with funding from the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania, the programme has improved access to healthcare in underserved districts of Dodoma and Kigoma by installing solar energy systems, water infrastructure, digital health equipment, electric mobility solutions, and energy-efficient technologies at primary healthcare facilities.

The initiative has reached more than 600,000 people, helping health facilities provide reliable services despite the growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking on the recognition, Fazal Issa Dinmohamed, Programme Manager – Environment and Climate at the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania, said ELICO Foundation’s feature marks an important milestone, noting that it is the first Irish Aid partner organization in Tanzania to have its work profiled on Irish Aid’s global communication platforms.

The Irish Aid feature showcases how healthcare facilities that once struggled with unreliable electricity and water shortages can now safely store vaccines, provide maternity services at night, maintain proper sanitation, and expand outreach services using clean energy solutions.

For ELICO Foundation, the recognition represents more than international visibility.

Fredrick Mushi, Director of Operations and Programs at ELICO Foundation, said the feature demonstrates accountability to development partners while creating new opportunities for collaboration.

The Foundation views the recognition as an affirmation of its commitment to designing integrated, community-centred interventions that combine renewable energy, water, climate resilience, and healthcare to improve lives across Tanzania.

ELICO Foundation expressed its appreciation to the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania and Irish Aid for their continued partnership and support, reaffirming its commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions that create lasting impact for underserved communities.
